Dangerous Liaisons
December 5 - 21 at The Abingdon Theatre

Wilde Mule Productions presents the World Premiere of Dangerous Liaisons beginning December 5 at The Abingdon Theatre. This new modern drama is adapted from Choderlos de Laclos' 1782 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Bradley S. Reichek and Dan Maccarone. Co-directed by Maccarone and Bryan Enk, this adaptation, stripped of any particular time period, falls somewhere between Christopher Hampton's acclaimed play and the recent film Cruel Intentions.

In the timeless world of Dangerous Liaisons, letters are deployed as weapons in a brutal game of seduction and revenge. Sarah Merteuil, jilted by her lover, enlists the aid of her former lover Stephan Valmont to exact vengeance. The two work out a plot to seduce a naïve virgin and bring shame to both her and her future husband, Merteuil's ex. The task proves easy for the experienced Valmont, who has another, more challenging conquest in mind. Valmont makes a bet with Merteuil that he can seduce a devoted, morally upstanding wife and bring proof of the conquest -- in writing. The prize will be a night of passion between the two ex-lovers.

The production stars Matthew Gray, Moira Stone, Christiaan Koop, Carrie Johnson, Stuart Luth, Josh Mertz, Debbie Troche, Hilary J. Prentice and Peter B. Brown. It features sets by Michael Daly, lighting and sound by Frank Cwiklik and costumes by Yumi Hatta.

According to co-playwright Bradley S. Reichek, “Les Liaisons Dangereuses was written as a series of 175 letters. Our knowledge of the characters is transmitted through these elegantly crafted missives. In other adaptations the epistolary form of the novel has been compromised. In our version, the letter is left in its rightful place of dominance. The writing desks of Valmont and Merteuil are always present, reinforcing that it is the letter that sets up intrigue, seduces, and, ultimately, kills. The novel also raises important questions about the injustices that women suffer in civil society. We have tried to bring these proto-feminist issues to the foreground of our piece.”

Dangerous Liaisons runs December 5 - 21, Thursday - Saturday at 8:00pm, Sunday at 3:00pm. The Abingdon Theatre is located at 432 West 42nd Street (between 9th & 10th Aves -- accessible from the A,C,E,1,2,3,N,R trains at 42nd Street). Tickets are $15.
